Shadow Play

"The Black Box" Lecture, Slide 33.

Jacques Yves Cousteau: "People protect what they love"
When deciding on what shadow structure to design my model in, I came across an image of a demon-like creature's shadow projected on the wall. This was quite intriguing, and got me thinking about the types of shadow projections I can generate. Cousteau was an underwater fanatic, and so wanted to develop a shadow amplifying that. Thinking of marine objects like a spear, boat and even fish scales, I created 3 identical "V" shaped objects behind one another, and putting them on a slight slope to give it that vertical exaggeration. Although I did my best to try and convey what I wanted, I did not quite meet my expectations, but regardless, I think it is close to what I wanted to represent.

Meeting Point of the Two Clients

Image i originally based my model on.

Within this picture, even though its very hard to see, i wanted to show the connection between both of my objects. I intended for both of the structures to be on a different level, as i wanted to relate to the client personality. Cousteau on one hand is a marine biologist, so i wanted to create a slope down towards his lair, or a dive within his dwelling. Campbell on the other hand is a genetics biologist, and so thinking of the DNA gene structure, i wanted to create a similar effect that could lead the client to his designated area.

The Sheltered area in the middle of the picture is the "meeting spot of the two clients".
Combining the two quotes, i decided to come with an enclosed area (protecting what we love), as well as giving it a rugged look. (sometimes the obvious is elusive)

A distant photo of the meeting spot.

Chosen Parallel Projections

Using the same chosen axonometrics, i aligned them in different ways to form different projections and found that this may be the best way to show connection between the two clients. I thought that perhaps the meeting point could be on the same level as the walk way of the model.

Chosen Axonometrics

This axonometric derived from the quote by Jacques Yves Costeau: "People protect what they love". I get the impression of an object wedged into another object - thinking of it like rubix cube in the palm of your hand.

This axonometric derived from the quote by Kieth Campbell: "Sometimes the obvious is elusive". I got the inspiration of something being quite distant, and to get there from one point to another would be obvious, but yet not as easy - as its a bit elusive.

*NOTE* The first 9 projections are the opposite angle of the other 9 projections.

DRAFT 1

Strenghts: good shape to begin with. strong texture.
Weaknesses: Ramp too steep. Stair look very dodgy.

Strenghts: Good texture and lights.
Weaknesses: Very large scale for a UT character to wonder around in.

Google 3D Warehouse

For the Google 3D Warehouse model of my project, please follow the link bellow.
Alternatively, go to http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/ and search "dmitri". The first model should be mine.
